Description
Brief history of the Colt MK IV Series 70 – Gold Cup National Match, cal. .45 ACP
The Colt Gold Cup National Match MK IV Series 70 is one of the most highly regarded sporting variants of the famous Colt Government Model 1911, intended above all for precision target shooting and Bullseye competitions.
The name National Match comes from the American tradition of precision shooting competitions, for which Colt developed, over the years, specially selected and finished versions of the 1911 platform.
The MK IV / Series 70, introduced in 1970, became highly regarded for its quality of workmanship, its classic firing mechanism and the finishes characteristic of Colt production of that period.
The Gold Cup National Match variant is distinguished by its adjustable target rear sight, match trigger, blued finish and walnut grips with Colt medallions.
Features of the example shown
The photograph shows a Colt MK IV Series 70 Gold Cup National Match in .45 Automatic calibre, with a blued finish and original Colt-type grips in chequered wood.
The image shows good to very good cosmetic condition, with superficial signs of use and a patina consistent with the age of the model. No damage is visible; direct inspection of its originality and mechanical condition confirmed a total absence of defects and 100% originality, including the grips, which are serial-numbered to the pistol.
Market valuation
Estimated value of the example photographed on the European market: 1600 - 2000 €
Estimated value
Good, visible signs of use : 900–1,200 €
Very good, original : 1,200–1,600 €
Excellent, with original finish : 1,600–2,000 €
Exceptional, with original box and documents : 2,000–2,500 €+
As a benchmark, US sales of comparable examples in August–September 2026 achieved prices of between approximately 800 and 1,526 USD, with higher figures for certain collector-grade examples. These are not, however, direct quotations for Romania.
Conclusion: The Colt MK IV Series 70 Gold Cup National Match is a classic sporting pistol with recognised collector value. The example in the photograph can be rated as excellent, given the verification of its finish, markings and original components.
For a more precise valuation, the pistol's full serial number is useful, as it also allows the year of manufacture to be confirmed: 1977, making it 49 years old.
