Description

The Colt Python was introduced by Colt in 1955 as the company’s premium revolver, intended for precision target shooting as well as for use by law enforcement and handgun hunters. It was regarded as “the Rolls-Royce of American revolvers”, built with a level of finish and hand fitting rarely seen in series production. The features that made the Python famous were its hand-tuned internal action, an exceptional trigger in both single and double action, a ventilated rib along the top of the barrel, a full-length underlug barrel and the legendary Colt Royal Blue finish, considered one of the most beautiful blued finishes ever applied to a production firearm. In the 1970s every Python was laser-collimated at the factory, making it the first production revolver to undergo this procedure. Collectors regard 1975 as part of the “golden era” of Colt production: all parts were still hand-fitted, quality control was very strict and the Royal Blue finish was at its peak. 1970s production predates the period of strikes and declining quality of the 1980s. For this reason, Pythons made between roughly 1965 and 1980 are particularly sought after.

The example shown is in excellent condition, retaining over 97% of its original bluing, with well-preserved edges, a cylinder showing very little wear and original grips in excellent condition, with no signs of oxidation. Condition grade: Excellent (95-98%)
