Description

Luxury European duelling pistol / gentleman’s flintlock, made in the late 18th or early 19th century, most probably French, Belgian (Liège), or German/Austrian with French influence.
The piece is one of a pair (“No. 2”), which is entirely normal for genuine duelling pistols of that historical period.
The pistol is highly sophisticated and is NOT a cheap modern replica. Its key features are the genuine flintlock mechanism, luxury workmanship, rich hand engraving, gilt/fire-gilt mounts, figured walnut, a barrel that turns octagonal towards the breech, the original ramrod, an aristocratic “saw handle” grip and decoration typical of prestige arms.
Stylistically, the gun resembles a continental European duelling/gentleman’s pistol rather than a military model. It may be a duelling pistol, an aristocratic travelling pistol, or a ceremonial/presentation pistol. The gilt decoration and engraving are above the level of an ordinary, austere English duelling pistol. It was most likely made between 1780 and 1820, in French Empire/Napoleonic workshops, possibly in Liège, Belgium, or in a German luxury workshop; pieces made by celebrated gunmakers (Manton, Mortimer, Le Page, Boutet etc.) fetch very high prices.
