Description
Brief history – Smith & Wesson Model 36 Chief’s Special, High-Polish Nickel
The Smith & Wesson Chief’s Special was introduced in 1950 as the first revolver built on the new compact J-frame platform. Designed for plain-clothes police officers and for concealed carry, it is chambered in .38 Special, has a five-round cylinder and a 1⅞″ barrel. In 1957, with the introduction of S&W numerical model designations, the Chief’s Special became the Model 36. Versions with a bright nickel finish were produced in smaller numbers than the blued ones and are more sought after by collectors today.
Condition assessment
The example pictured shows:
a very well-preserved high-polish nickel finish;
well-defined markings, monogram and edges;
a pinned barrel, typical of classic production;
case-hardened hammer and trigger;
original wooden grips with S&W medallions;
only the light scratches and superficial marks normal for polished nickel.
The apparent cosmetic condition is excellent, approximately 95–97%. The German “72” marking most likely indicates the technical inspection carried out in 1972, but does not automatically represent the exact year of American manufacture (actual year of manufacture: 1962).
Market valuation
In recent American sales, nickel-plated Model 36 examples have sold for approximately 449 to 695 USD; one described as 99.5% factory nickel fetched 850 USD, and a practically new example in its original box reached 1,107 USD.
For the example shown, if the original factory finish and the matching serial number of the grips are confirmed:
realistic market value in Europe: 850–1,050 EUR;
with original, correctly numbered grips: 950–1,150 EUR;
with original box and documents: 1,100–1,300 EUR;
recommended catalogue listing price: 1,090 EUR, negotiable.
Its collector value is supported by the no-dash configuration, the factory high-polish nickel finish, the very good condition and the retention of the original components.
