Description
Brief history
The Smith & Wesson Model 36 “Chief’s Special” was introduced in 1950 together with the compact J-frame: a 5-shot revolver in .38 Special, with a DA/SA mechanism and fixed sights. From 1957, the trade name “Chief’s Special” was supplemented by the Model 36 designation. “No-dash” examples, such as this 1962 gun, belong to the first configuration and are prized for their traditional finish, pinned barrel and early-production features.
Assessment of the example
From the photograph, the revolver shows:
very well-preserved original bluing with a strong lustre;
superficial handling marks and a faint turn line on the cylinder;
sharp edges and well-defined markings;
wooden grips with S&W medallions, in very good condition, with a serial number matching the gun;
correct configuration for a Model 36 no-dash with a 2” barrel.
Estimated visual condition: very good to excellent, approximately 92–95%.
Indicative market valuation
For the current European market:
realistic transaction value: 650–800 EUR;
recommended catalogue price: approximately 795 EUR;
with original numbered grips, box and period paperwork: 850–1,000 EUR.
