Description
Brief history – Smith & Wesson Model 37 "CHIEF'S SPECIAL AIRWEIGHT" no-dash, 1962
The Smith & Wesson Model 37, known as the Chief’s Special Airweight, was introduced in 1951 as a lightweight version of the Model 36. It is built on the compact J-frame, with the frame in aluminium alloy and a steel barrel and cylinder, and is chambered in .38 Special. It has a 5-round cylinder, a single- and double-action mechanism, fixed sights and, in the standard configuration, a barrel of approximately 2".
The 1962 example belongs to early no-dash production and features a pinned barrel, a classic finish and “diamond Magna” wooden grips. Certain internal changes to the hammer mechanism were made in the same year.
Thanks to its low weight and compact dimensions, the Model 37 became one of the best-known Airweight revolvers for discreet carry. Early, original and well-preserved examples are of greater collector interest than later variants.
