Description

Brief history

The Bodyguard Airweight was introduced in 1955 and in 1957 received the official designation Model 38.

It is a compact revolver built on the J-frame, in .38 S&W Special calibre, with a five-shot cylinder and a barrel of approximately 2 inches. The frame is made of lightweight aluminium alloy, while the barrel and cylinder are carbon steel. The hammer is shrouded by the frame extension but remains accessible for manual cocking, allowing it to be fired in both single and double action.

This configuration was intended for discreet carry by police officers, detectives and protection personnel, and is the lightweight version of the all-steel Model 49 Bodyguard.

Condition assessment

The example pictured is in excellent condition, visually estimated at around 95–97%:

- very well-preserved glossy black finish;

- crisp markings and S&W monogram;

- the cylinder shows only light turn marks and handling marks;

- the edges of the frame and barrel are well defined;

- the original wooden grips are well preserved, with S&W medallions;

- a few superficial marks are visible on the grips and action components.

Market valuation

The current international average for a used Model 38 Bodyguard Airweight is approximately 423 USD, but old, original examples in exceptional condition change hands above this average. truegunvalue.com

For the example shown:

- realistic market value: 600–800 EUR;

- recommended catalogue price: 750 EUR;

- with the original box, papers and confirmation of the original finish: 800–950 EUR.

The Model 38 Airweight is prized by Smith & Wesson collectors for its lightweight construction, its classic Bodyguard configuration and its important role in the evolution of compact service and self-defence revolvers.
