Description
Brief history – Smith & Wesson Model 40 no-dash, 1966
The Smith & Wesson Centennial was launched in 1952 to mark the company's centenary, and in 1957 it received the official designation Model 40. This example, made in 1966, belongs to the classic no-dash series, which predates the engineering changes later indicated by dash suffixes.
It is a compact all-steel revolver built on the J-frame, chambered in .38 Special, with a 5-round cylinder and a 1⅞" barrel. The hammer is fully enclosed, the mechanism is double action only, and the grip safety on the backstrap is the distinctive feature of the Centennial model. Original production ended in 1974.
Indicative market valuation
For a 1966 example:
good condition, with normal signs of use: 650–800 EUR;
very good to excellent condition, entirely original: 850–1,050 EUR;
near-new, with numbered grips, original box and paperwork: 1,100–1,350 EUR.
The American market indicates an average value of around 805 USD for used examples, while early guns that are very well preserved and come with the original box can exceed 1,000 USD.
Recommended catalogue price, excellent condition: 995 EUR. The serial number on the grips matches that of the gun.
