Description
Brief history – Smith & Wesson Model 49 Bodyguard:
The Smith & Wesson Model 49 Bodyguard is a compact J-frame revolver, introduced in 1959 at the request of the Massachusetts State Police as an all-steel version of the Bodyguard Airweight. It is chambered in .38 Special, with a five-round cylinder, a barrel of approximately 2″ and a partially shrouded hammer, which allows both double-action firing and manual cocking. The Model 49 remained in production until 1996 and is appreciated by collectors for its classic “humpback” configuration, robust construction and traditional S&W finish.
Market valuation
The example pictured is in apparently excellent cosmetic condition, with a well-preserved glossy finish, clear markings and wooden grips with S&W medallions. Recent American sales indicate approximately 590–700 USD for used examples in good or excellent condition, around 737 USD for a very well-preserved example with box, and up to 1,200 USD for a practically new one in its original box.
For the example shown, if the finish is original, the mechanics are flawless and the grips are original and numbered to match the gun:
- realistic market value in Europe: 850–1,100 EUR;
- with original box, documents and accessories: 1,000–1,250 EUR;
- for a relatively quick sale: approximately 800–900 EUR.
The valuation assumes confirmation that the finish is original and the absence of corrosion, mechanical play or later alterations.
