Description

Brief history

The Smith & Wesson Model 60 “Chief’s Special Stainless” was launched in 1965 as the first production revolver made entirely of stainless steel. It is the stainless version of the famous Model 36: J-frame, double/single action, five-shot cylinder and .38 Special calibre. Early examples had a short pinned barrel and a highly polished stainless finish, later replaced by a satin one. Smith & Wesson

Assessment of the example

The example with serial number R83618 is a classic “no-dash” Model 60, in apparently excellent condition:

  • well-preserved stainless finish, with minimal superficial marks;

  • crisp edges, markings and lettering;

  • original wooden grips, numbered 83618 to match the gun;

  • original collector configuration, with short barrel and fixed sights.

  • year of manufacture: 1973

Visual estimate: approximately 97-99% condition.

Indicative market valuation

Recent US sales of ordinary no-dash Model 60 examples have been at around 489–550 USD, while an early example described as new reached approximately 905 USD. truegunvalue.com

For the example shown, owing to its excellent condition and original grips with matching number:

  • realistic market value: 700–900 EUR;

  • recommended catalogue/display price: approximately 950 EUR;

  • with the original box, documents and mechanical confirmation of its impeccable condition: 950–1,100 EUR.

  • with the Smith & Wesson letter of authenticity.

The original numbered grips are an important advantage in terms of authenticity and collector interest.
