Description

The revolver pictured is a late 19th-century Smith & Wesson “Double Action”, from the .38 Double Action family, often found in Europe under the trade name “Smith & Wesson Departure” / “Départ” in old Continental catalogues. In the late 19th century, Smith & Wesson dominated the market for quality top-break revolvers. The Double Action models were very popular in the USA and Europe, valued for their fast reloading. They were carried by civilians, detectives, officers and travellers.
The revolver shown is visually very elegant: a very well-preserved finish, spectacular mother-of-pearl grips, a refined profile and little wear, with a premium period look. It is a luxurious civilian piece, possibly customised in period, with far more of a “high society” character than military arms. The mother-of-pearl grips significantly increase the gun's value, as they are genuine original mother-of-pearl. It is a piece with an aristocratic civilian character.
