Description

BRIEF HISTORY – UBERTI, COLT NAVY 1851 BLACK POWDER model Cal. .36BP

The Uberti 1851 Navy is an Italian reproduction of the famous Colt Model 1851 Navy, one of the most elegant and widespread black-powder revolvers: a percussion revolver using black powder and loaded from the front of the cylinder. The original model was designed by Samuel Colt and produced from 1850–1851 onwards, becoming one of the best-known revolvers of the 19th century. It was used in the American Civil War and on the Western Frontier, by the Texas Rangers, and by military officers and famous civilians such as Wild Bill Hickok.

Uberti reproduces this model in its traditional configuration: .36 calibre, single-action mechanism, six-chamber cylinder with naval engraving, octagonal barrel, steel frame with a marbled appearance, brass trigger guard and wooden grip. The manufacturer still includes it today in its range of functional historical replicas.

Condition assessment

The example shown is in very good to excellent overall condition, visually estimated at approximately 95–97%:

- the markings and the “BLACK POWDER ONLY” inscription are clear;

- the naval engraving on the cylinder is well preserved;

blued finish,

- colour case-hardened frame,

- brass trigger guard and grip frame,

- classic “Navy” configuration.

- external mechanism and screws complete;

- the wooden grip is well preserved, with a glossy finish;

- the barrel bluing shows fine handling marks and wear;

- the loading lever and some metal surfaces show a discreet patina.

- the condition of the bore and the nipples, the cylinder indexing and the functioning of the mechanism are all excellent.

Market valuation

For the example pictured:

- realistic trading value: 280–380 EUR;

- recommended catalogue price: approximately 395 EUR;

It is an attractive, well-made historical reproduction, suitable both for collecting black-powder firearms and for recreational shooting, though without the collector value of an original Colt 1851 Navy.
