Description
The Walther P38 pistol was developed to replace the Luger P08, which was considered too complex and costly for wartime production. It was officially adopted by the Wehrmacht in 1938 and became the principal German military pistol until the end of the war. (en.wikipedia.org). The Walther P38 code “ac 42” is one of the most important German service arms of the Second World War. The code “ac” identified the Walther factory in Zella-Mehlis, while “42” indicates the year of production: 1942. The P38 introduced several modern features, including a double-action/single-action mechanism, a safety decocker, simpler construction suited to mass production and locking by a vertically pivoting locking block. These solutions influenced, and were later carried over into, many modern pistols, including the Beretta 92. Indeed, the open-top slide cut away to lighten the gun also became a hallmark of the Beretta 92.
Correct markings include “ac 42” on the slide, WaA359 Waffenamt stamps and the Nazi eagle proof mark.
The example in the photograph has a very even original finish and clean edges, with no severe wear – aesthetically excellent for display. The barrel shows a different patina, which may indicate a part with genuine wear. The “ac 42” marking added on the slide is realistically positioned for an early Walther P38.
