Description

The Mosin-Nagant is one of the most widely produced military rifles in history, with more than 37 million examples manufactured between 1891 and the 1970s. It was the standard rifle of the Russian Empire and later of the USSR, serving in both World Wars and in numerous subsequent conflicts. After gaining independence in 1917, Finland captured and purchased large numbers of Russian Mosin-Nagants. Rifles accepted into Finnish service received the “SA” (Suomen Armeija – Finnish Army) stamp and, in many cases, were rebuilt or rebarrelled. The rifle in the photographs is a Mosin-Nagant Model 1891 (M91), manufactured at the Izhevsk arsenal in 1941. The “1941” marking is very clear on the chamber, and the triangle with an arrow is the emblem of the Izhevsk arsenal. The SA in a square marking is also visible, indicating that the rifle later entered service with the Finnish army. The rifle appears to have remained in its Soviet M91/30 configuration, with no major Finnish modifications to the barrel or sights.

The rifle has remained in its Soviet M91/30 configuration, with no major Finnish modifications to the barrel or sighting system.
